Larimar is often believed to have a soothing and calming energy that helps reduce stress, anxiety, and emotional turmoil. It is said to promote a sense of relaxation, tranquility, and inner peace. Some people use larimar as a tool for emotional healing, allowing them to release negative emotions, fears, and worries. Its gentle blue color is thought to resonate with the throat and heart chakras, encouraging clear communication and emotional balance.
Larimar is sometimes associated with enhancing communication skills and promoting self-expression. It is thought to encourage open and honest communication, making it easier to express thoughts, feelings, and emotions. The gemstone's blue hues are believed to align with the throat chakra, which governs communication and self-expression. Using larimar is said to assist in finding the right words and fostering effective communication with both others and ones self.
Larimar is a rare blue variety of the mineral pectolite and is found only in a few locations around the world. The primary source of larimar is the Dominican Republic, specifically in a region called the Barahona province. The unique blue color of larimar, ranging from light blue to turquoise, is attributed to the presence of copper within the mineral.
The name "larimar" is a combination of the Spanish word "lari" (which refers to the name of the daughter of the Dominican who rediscovered the stone in the 1970s) and the Spanish word "mar" (which means sea). The name is fitting, as the stone's blue shades are often reminiscent of the Caribbean Sea's colors.
While the Dominican Republic is the main source of larimar, small amounts of similar blue pectolite have been found in other parts of the world, such as the United States (in California and Nevada) and in some other Caribbean islands. However, these sources are generally not as significant as the larimar deposits in the Dominican Republic.
